boiler selection

I just heard that Triangle has a NEW unit, a Solo 60. Has anyone tried this new, smaller boiler? I have been told that primary/seconday piping is not absolutely necessary with these Triangle boilers. Is this true? Considering the cost is minimal if I use 1" black pipe for the primary loope, would it be worth the time/trouble to pipe-out a primary circut anyway? Just curious. Presently the boiler piping is 1 1/4" that bull-head tees into 2" black pipe that then supply/returs both left and right sides of the basement. So a primary circut would be very different. But worth it? I truly don't know. Perhaps one of you can assist me here?

    boiler selection

I am going to install a new hot water, gas-fired boiler in our house. My heat loss is roughly 60K. I am caught between the Ultra 80, series 3, and Triangle Tube's solo 110. My system is an old gravity style, with 2" headers running across the basement, supply and return, teeing off with supply and returns for every radiator on the 1st and 2nd floors. We have 10 cast iron rads and ci baseboard as well. And we will be adding an indirect hot water heater, too. I suppose this would be considered a low-head high-mass system? I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions regarding this project.

    Triangle Tube vs Ultra

I have an Ultra 80(series 2) in my own home, and have had no problems with it. I have installed both Ultras and Triangle Tube. Hands down, between the two, I would go with the Solo(Better heat exchanger, same controls{series 2}, less flow resistance, easier install).

No matter which boiler you chose, I would add a wye strainer or a dirt seperator to protect the boiler.

Depnding on budget, now would be the time for some piping upgrades. Whether you go with thermostatic radiator valves or additional zoning, you will get better comfort and efficiency.

Yes what he said. WC is Good but the SOLO is a bit better. I would use the Solo due the fact that's its a change out. The strainer is also a must on an old cast iron change out. Also would be good the make a reciever below the boiler with a larger pipe size and a boiler drain before the strainer. That way you could trap the sludge in it before it gets to the boiler. The Solo has larger water ways and the SS. If you would have sludge problems the Solo would hold up better.
