I'm looking
at a job with a W/M cast iron boiler heated by an oil gun. He has an indirect sitting next to the boiler for domestic hot water. His office is right next door and he sez he hears the burner come on several times a day for no good reason, even through the Summer. He hears the dollars going up the chimney. I was thinking of getting rid of the low limit, adding a flu damper, and installing an outdoor re-set. Any suggestions or recommendations.
ideas to add? WW

Just a bump and
an explantion. I deal with gas boilers all the time, and have a hole in my knowledge when it comes to oil fired equipment. Do they make flu dampers that go on oil boilers? It seems tyo me the little combustion vents on the gun really don't let much air flow through the boiler for stand by loss. I can see on a gas boiler with atmoshpheric burners how a flu damper is needed, but not so much on an oil fired boiler. Help set me straight please. WW

They did at one time
most I've seen were made by Flair, which is now out of business. I think Field is working on one though.
But I seem to remember a Riello burner would have an air intake damper, which would do almost the same thing- haven't done much with Riellos so I'm not sure, maybe a Riello guru could confirm it......

Start by going cold start
It will probably work just fine. As the boiler cools, there is less loss up the chimney anyway. So if you don't do all 3, start with cold start, then outdoor reset or heat manager, then flue damper. My opinion anyway.

Becket USED to,..I heard they did have some problems with them but then heard that they refined it. Perhaps those that deal with Beckets can enlighten,...0
