Main Air Vent Replacement

I'd vent that with two Gorton #2 vents. Gerry's chart will show why.

Is this the only steam main in the house?

    Main Air Vent Replacement

I have a main air vent on my one pipe steam boiler system that is perhaps from the 1920's. It's made by the C.E. Squires company of Cleveland, OH and indicates that is from the "Mouat Series." I'm not sure exactly what a comparable replacement main vent would be.

    the information you desire

is located in these charts..proceeds go to charity..http://www.heatinghelp.com/shopcart/product.cfm?category=2-138 The squires vent is the same Mouat bullet vent..or it could also be their vacuum wafer..they made both..Mouat was the original company..it survived his death but eventually was sold to squires company who i'm told was located in the same building.

OK, I'm now armed with the Venting Capacity Chart and have identified my main vent as the Squires Co. Mouat Series Cast Iron Bullet Style which makes sense because not only does it say Squires Mouat Series but it's a heavy little guy that looks like an artillary shell.

I found a portion of my main vent and I measured a circumferance of a little over 6 inches which gives the pipe a diameter of about 2 inches(?). The main has several T connections but the route from the boiler to the main vent is approximately 60 feet.

Next, on my boiler, I have actually both a Honeywell Pressuretrol and a Vaporstat. The Pressurtrol is set to 5 psi and the Vaporstat has a Main set to 8 oz/in2 and a Diff set to 6 oz/ins2. Does that mean the boiler operates between 2 and 8; the Holohan book indicates pressures much lower than that is normally used.

At this point, I'm a little unsure how to put this all together to determine the proper main vent choice.

It is the only main vent in the house and it's also at the location where the return starts.

I would assume you would create a manifold for the two Gorton's which are probably on a 1/2" pipe, which effectively becomes the width of the pipe we're concerned with(?). What I still don't understand is how much pressure my boiler is putting out.

    That's right

two vents on a small manifold.

The usual 0-30 PSI gauge, which is required by Code, won't show the ounce pressures your system runs at. They do make low-pressure gauges, one source is The Gauge Store. Here's one that would probably work for you:

Do not remove the original gauge, it must remain to satisfy Code. Install the low-pressure one on a tee.
