BTU Meters

Tekmar 157 has a variable speed feature, which helps maintain consistent dela across the collector and saves electricity. Actual GPM is recorded on the control with the pump at %100. The control then calculates the effect of reduced pump speeds on flow.

I really like the idea of energy transfer logging on solar. This gives a baseline that could be useful in identifying future problems, It also proves or disproves the viability of an installed system.

I wish there was a way this could work with PV DC pumps.

    I've been hearing

more and more about btu meters that can go in line and measure btu's in a solar hydronic situation. Seems like a useful thing to have. It also seems like it could get expensive. :( Has anyone any experience or recommendations that they can share? WW

Most of the new solar controllers

have the ability to give you very accurate data without adding the actual optional meter.

They call it "heat quantity measurement"

With the additional sensor, included in some brands, the control measures supply and return temperatures.

You program in the flow rate from the flow indicator located in the Solar pump station, and the type of glycol and %. The control displays the value in KWh. It's an amazingly accurate number the control manufacturers tell me, when they run them along side the water meter type BTU meters.

Reading in KWh makes the math easy for the homeowner if they know their price per KWh they can calculate savings.
