40 or 60 gallon indirect ???

really need a mixing valve regardless of the size of the indirect. The recovery on most indirects far exceeds the normal demand. The only time you get into trouble is with large loads like Jacuzzi's etc.In that case there is no substitute for size

Ya know we all say it and

are afflicted with the same disease ... we think to much..

I have a customer who has a leaking indirect. Its a 35 gallon and she says they don't run out of hot water but her kids are getting older ( 10 and 12 )so they'll be showering more.

So what do I give her ??

Do I do a 40 and install a tempering valve or do I install a 60 ?? Both will work and I know the higher temp will kill bacteria growth but will the higher temp loose heat more than a 60 at 130 ??

She'll do what ever I say and I should just pick one and move on BUT ..... I'm thinking too much ??

they will thank you for more hot water in the future, you were looking out for their best interest. Go bigger, and keep the customer and their friends.

    I vote 60

The difference in cost and heat loss is nominal usually between the two. Tim

    60 gal tank

If the boiler is a cold start boiler, if they take all their showers in the morning, or at the same time, I say go w/ the 60 gallon. I have had some customers complain about the 40 gal connected to 100-120k btu boilers, with cold start. Tanks were piped right with proper pump and mixing valve. I would go with the 60 and save some aggrevation in the future.
  • Which indirect

will you be using? Some of them have different first-hour ratings.

FWIW, a 40-gallon Triangle Tube Smart indirect I installed some years ago handled two teenagers just fine....

We use Super-Stor as our standard unit. Looks like 60 is the way to go.

    How much boiler HP?

that has a lot to do with indirect performance. I've lived with a 32 gallon Phase 3 for years. With the previous GV 105K and now the Knight 80, I can run about 2- 2-5 GPM non stop, even without solar preheat.

It would depend more on their useage. Do they need a lot of HW all at once? if so dump load with a larger tank may be better.

Steady consistent loads work fine with smaller tanks. Even that TT Mini Smart 6 gallon will keep up with typical shower loads, with enough power, and piping to drive it.

    Geting Tanked...

I'd use the TT Smart 60 with a tempering valve, keeping the tank at 140. I'm back in NY this week, so this advice comes from the Left Coast.
