    Looking at...

an old gravity system converted to oil with active circulation years ago. Customer wants to shift to NG. I'm thinking the characteristics of the mod con boiler would be perfect for this changeout. Any opinions are welcome.

    By the dozen...

We've done several dozen gravity replacements using the Viessmann Vitodens. We add a thermostatic radiator valves TRV's) to all the old radiators and every owner has exclaimed that their fuel bill dropped 30-50%!!

I was skeptical at first, having always used cast iron boilers for the application. I'm now convinced mod-cons are the way to go. The biggest issue is finding a route for the special venting that meets code, and keeps the exhaust plume from being visible from view windows.

  • Yes, the characteristics (generous radiation, low head loss, high volume, medium mass) do make gravity conversions especially well suited to make the most of the efficiency and comfort allowed by mod-con boilers.

TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) are extraordinarily well suited to gravity conversions driven by mod-cons.

    Thanks,

Looked at Prestige but I'm not happy seeing them online for the general public to buy at less than my wholesaler wants. That's discouraging. I'll take a look at the Viessmann. The TRVs are a nice idea as well, didn't think of that. ;)

    The Prestige

is my favorite Mod con right now. Just put one in last week. They work well and give me no tummy aches from stress caused by nuisance trips. WW

    ModCon and Radiators

You are right, the ModCon is the perfect fit for gravity conversions. The mod and the con are both put to their best advantage and ALL the modcons work on old radiators, often oversized for open window operation (to fend off the deadly TB). The only thing better for a modcon is a nice big slab of concrete and radiant floor heating.

    Around here...

The Vitodens 100 is coming in at a better price than the Prestige 110. Which strikes me as strange, I didn't expect that.

It is the 200 without the brains. Great for multiboiler or separate controls.

    I guess,,,

that explains why the 200 is over twice the price of the 100.
