Renter seeking knowledge about steam heat

    Greetings!

I'm in the process of looking at homes to rent, and found one built in 1930. The home has a very old looking furnace as shown in a photo, but the homeowner says that it has been renovated into a boiler and has a new motor. Can you give me some basic insight into what I should ask about the furnace? In college, I lived in a dorm that I believe had steam heat, and the radiators rattled and banged loudly during the night. Is there a type of furnace that is more prone to doing this?

I appreciate any info you can provide!

    Thanks,
    Angela

    Hi Dan,

The photo was on a flyer, so I can't attach it :-( , however I will be visiting the home next week and can get a photo then.

    Dan's book

"We Got Steam Heat!" is a worthy investment and a good read, Angela. I just wanted to get back to your root question in so saying.

Whatever Q&A sessions you may generate here (and are also welcome, mind you!), can get a head-start with that book.

That said, noise, banging, hissing and spitting are not normal nor should they be tolerated..
