CAN A WOODSTOVE'S exhaust be tested with a CO sensor by drilling a hole in the stovepipe & inserting a probe? is there a temp limit of smoke so as not to damage the probe?

I have tested many wood burning appliances with my combution analyzer and CO tester. No problem!

  • thanx. can you remember a # [ppm?]associated with an epa woodburner [ballpark]? or other stoves you may remember. i'm trying to get a rough idea so i can compare other stoves.

    zero smoke

I thought on oil you should use your analizer at zero or at least close to zero smoke to protect the sensor and life of the filter.

Last I looked at a wood stove flue zero smoke was not happening.

    CO numbers for wood

I would expect an EPA Phase II woodstove to still crank out at least 50 ppm on a good day when you have a brisk free burning fire that has been going for awhile. However, wood smoke can vary greatly so that number could soar.

For oil and gas numbers, refer to the mfr. for some generic nmbers, refer to Bacharach's Training Room site.

    CO testing wood burners

I've tested mine several times. With 5 year old dried oak, banked coals (ideal contitions) it runs in the 2,000 to 3,000 ppm range.

it's an older wood burner - I also tested one of those outside wood boilers with around the same results.

  • thanx, more #s?
