Unique Steamer - DF

I came across this sleeping Pacific steamer at a church. Its out of service (leaks in the lower section) but its counterpart (a Bryan Steamer) handles the load. Looks cool in that room, but what I assume is an asbestos "containment" certainly assures it will be left undisturbed for a while longer.

    Old Steamer

This is a unique steam job my service manager, Bill Dooly, has been working on. The c.1915 D.C. apartment building is heated by the Kewanee which has been converted to oil. The Pacific Steel coal burner has long since been disconnected. With the price of oil, maybe coal isn't a bad option!

Bil has proposed a Burnham V-11 with a dual fuel burner and new control package. We don't have this one yet but I will post pictures if we get it. -DF

    old boiler

I love those old steam boilers. If you dont collect boiler gauges , boiler water colums with tri cocksor if by chance there is a steam whistle you could post it on Ebay. there is a market out there and I am part of that market.

    Where is it?

Where in D.C. is it?...and, if you want to get rid of the gauges, etc. locally...I'm in Reston. Also Dan, been doing any more jobs out in the Valley lately?

    Location

    Mike,

This one is at 15th and New Hampshire just south of Meridian Hill Park. Attached are some photos of the building.

We don't do too much work in the valley. The closest is a large renovation at Oxbow Farm in Front Royal. -DF

    I wonder

if the second boiler was intended to be a spare, but when the Pacifics needed replacement they only replaced one of them?

    Dan.

I haven't heard from them either. We proposed a 28 Smith. Webster G/O. Leaving the Kewanee & removing the stoker. More room to work & shorter breech.

Hope you get it. We won't finish w/ what we have on the books. Some of the Mechanicals are already working 60. Going to get interesting.

    Steamer

    Ron,

I figured you would recognize this one. I'll let you know what happens. If they don't commit soon, it will have to wait until next year.

Are you free for lunch at Cactus Cantina? Bill and I will meet you there (on us this time)when you have time. -DF

    Re: V11 replacing old firetube

Dan, do you add a condensate feed tank/pump set to make up for the lack of water content of the new vs old boiler? I have found that I alway's add one to make up the difference, otherwise flood back probs in shoulder seasons especially. Just wondering. Tim

    Feeder

    Tim,

We did figure on a boiler feed pump and pump controller in our proposal. Since this is currently a gravity return, we will have to cut F&T's at the drops. I realize there are differing opinions with regards to this issue but we feel this is the best way to handle the lower water content and lack of an "A" dimension with the new boiler. -DF

    Er, no.

Close. But, there is enough "A." And. in our unfair city, that boiler feed tank just triggered a daily inspection, when the boiler is operating, by a D. C. Licensed Stationary Engineer. Going rate is around $15K just to sign the Log Book.

The 28 Smith will work where others can't. We've removed more than a few boiler feed tanks, & straight condensate units, on 1-pipe steam over the years. 1 less mechanical device to service, & $15K per year more for the bldg owner.

Call you manana, Dan. This week's crisis appears to be over.

    Pacific Boiler

I've been nursing along an old Pacific boiler set up for water. It looks like your dead steamer's little brother. Waiting for the owner to budget a replacement with a bank of Knight condensers.

    Ron

Looking forward to your call, Ron and catching up with you over lunch at the Cantina.

We don't always agree on how to do a job, even though I readily admit you are right more often than not.

Don't forget the short section of horizontal return just before it drops into the pit. With the Kewanee, it is under water and the "A" dimension is ok. With the V-11, it will be above the water line on a gravity retrun leaving about a 20" "A" dimension - not enough. Not sure about the Smith.

As far as the cost of the DC requirement for daily inspection: I was going to refer that to you! I'll collect my commission at the bar at Cactus Cantina. -DF
