24 Volt Transformer

The transformers installed in s lot of HVAC equipment are junk and therefore many folks think it is normal for them to hum and heat up. It’s not normal for a good transformer that is adequately sized for the job. Good luck finding one from an HVAC house though. The little Honeywell ones are passable. The ones TACO puts in their controllers are junk. I just got a Slant Fin boiler and it has a Honeywell in it on a pump relay. It’s just a 24 volt transformer. If it hums, I will replace it with a toroidal. One wound in the USA from the folks at http://toroidal-power-transformers.com/. They do not hum and they do not get warm even under full load. There is no excuse for a small transformer to get warm / hot under no load. Thats a bad transformer poorly designed and poorly made with poor quality materials.

    New 24v ac transformer

Just had a new PIN5 (Steam) boiler installed. I have had nothing but trouble with the plumber who did the job. Now, The boiler’s 24v transformer burnt out and the plumber replaced it with an aftermarket model. I never noticed before, but is it common for the transformer to hum and feel warm to the touch? The boiler isn’t running, and there doesn't appear to be a draw.

    yes

That is normal for a transformer like that. Those are drawing power any time the power is on to the unit. They get warm and will sometimes give a slight hum.

This is going on all over your house right now. Your TV is doing it, your computer, basically anything with a transformer that is wired or plugged into a house electrical outlet is drawing energy for the transformer whether the device is on or not. Most anything with the little black box rather than a standard plug at the outlet is doing this.
