Pipe Insulation - How thick?

My project is a 100 yr. old colonial renovation. All of the asbestos has been removed from exposed pipe on this one pipe steam heating system. Pipe insulation is the next project. What thickness of fiberglass pipe insulation is appropriate for the New York metro geographic area?

Insulation Thickness
You could probably go as low as 1/2" thick fiberglass. Just keep in mind what you are trying to accomplish. You want to keep the steam in a vapor form till it gets to the radiator. Not have it condense before it gets to the heat emitter. So the thicker the better but more $$$$$.

Now I understand . . .
why my contractor used 1" when some people had recommended up to 2"0 -
just causing trouble
Another perspective is to ask how long the insulation is going to last(say 50 years). Then divide by two and make a wild guess about how much energy is going to cost then (in 25 years). Insulate to that level :~) Think life cycle cost rather than first cost.
