do you ever need an expansion tank on a hot water recirc line for hot water tanks

You need to think...
... about the entire system. If the house/building is on a pressure reducer or backflow preventer or some other one way valve, you need a way to accommodate thermal expansion. The recirc loop itself needs no separate tank.

installed
Bob, I installed one on our water heater a month ago. We have a well pump. It works great with no effects on any other part of the system. It does save a ton of water and BTU's from the Vitodens.0
