Water heater question - Indirect vs. Direct

I am looking to replace my oil steam boiler with a new gas steamer and currently have an indirect hot water heater and have been told different things on the replacement. Is it more fuel efficient to go with an indirect hw heater on the new system or a stand alone direct fired hw heater. Thoughts?? Also, what brands would you recommend for either. Right now i have and Amtrol indirect which i have been told is crap. Thanks

which one???
I would definitely stay with the indirect unless you went with a point of use/whole house gas fired water heater. The only "crappy" thing about an Amtrol is they tend to leak on occasion. It is a good unit if properly maintain (like anything else). You will get lots of suggestions on what brand to use, but when it comes to steam, I go with Weil Mclain everytime......proven and tested by lots of them in the field with nary a problem
