Hi Ron, Have you ever used the EK fresh air kit when installing a System 200?

This job was in Dix Hills, NY

And I wasn't ready for it after hanging out with Mad Dog and the boys at the picnic .........

The initial call was to replace a leaking Superstor indirect . It steamrolled into a whole new system . Which is one of the only good things to come of the skyrocketing price of oil - EVERYONE will eventually want the most efficient piece of equipment .

I think this was an American Standard . It was big , old and nasty . Kinda like me :)

    Yes

it's an A-S Arcoliner, looks like the wet-base version. I think Dan once wrote you could cremate someone in one of those and the neighbors would never know....

    Nice work, as usual.

    EK1 and aquabooster

The system was installed by Phil , Tom and myself . A very long day and we didn't have enough time to take the old beast out . We'll also go back and put some proper clamps on the fresh air intake .

It's amazing how fast this tiny little boiler heated up the tank . And you can barely hear it running . I'd like to see the control a little more bulletproof - I almost took the whole thing out by falling off a bucket .

I believe this is the most efficient boiler you can buy - gas or oil ( according to a recent BNL study ) . I can understand why .

    Nice job!

Is that an electric water heater you are using as an indirect? Looks like an American Water Heater...

    Hey Rick

That's the System 2000 storage tank . The boiler uses a flat plate heat exchanger and bronze circ . I'll have to time the next one but I'll bet it heats 40 gallons as fast or faster than most indirects .

    Thanks alot Rick .

    It was wet base

It also had an 8 inch flue . I can just see those dollar bills floating up the chimney ........... And I'm to believe lower stack temperature has little to do with fuel savings ? This behemoth is proof positive .

    Thank you Frank .

    EK install

Job looks good. A couple suggestions. A 2 hole galv strap or 2 hold the combustion air pipe neatly on the side of the base. May save an elbow or two and it holds securely so it can be friction fit for disassembly during tune ups. It is a good idea to drill a 1/4" hole in the lowest point of the air pipe to let out any condensation or snow melt that could ever find it's way in there. It could cause a mysterious combustion change or lockout if that trap ever got enough water in it. I agree that those boilers are the best thing going too.

Ron, I don't think that's your style of job

It is not stuck under a stairwell in a cramped closet or under a house. I think it's a little out of your league. :) Tim
  • Nice job!

Looks great, customer will be thanking you when the snow flies.

    Well .......

it might be a little out of my league , but I think we did a pretty good job :)

Although I post alot of pics of installs in tight quarters , my first 10 years was mainly steam boiler replacements . And the tight space installs only comprise maybe 1 in 5 of our jobs .

Good idea about securing it to the base , I'll do that on the next job . We did dry fit the 2 ells closest to the burner for ease of service . The 1/4 inch hole is a good idea too . Maybe a bigger hole with a siphon loop if we install the next one off the floor a little . We did pitch the horizontal pipe down toward the outside wall just in case . Thanks Ken

Nice to hear from you buddy . I love those little " tricks of the trade " you run into . Bricks or nipples under the burner is always a good one . One time we found an old Rheingold bottle wedged in there .

    Thanks Charlie .

    We were back today

to remove the old boiler . Actually it was pretty clean for such an old beast . The homeowners seemed very pleased about the outcome . The wife used to work for Taco Heaters in Manhattan years ago . When I told her her I was hanging out with Johnny White the day before , she didn't believe me . Too much of a coincidence ?

Thanks alot Bill . I hope all is well with you buddy .

    Fresh air kit ?

All the EKs we've installed so far have come with a 2 inch PVC male adapter and an outside vent . Is there another optional kit you can order ? I'd like to use a more heavy duty outside vent if they make it .
