Keeping old steam radiators if we are are switching hot water

Hi All.

My wife and I have a 1910 Victorian home with steam heat and oil fuel-that is sky rocketing. We are looking to switch to gas/hot water heat and two contractors say the best efficiency comes from replacing the old radiators with these modern-looking metal squares things. Uchhh. We've been directed to this listserve for feedback and alternantive ideas. That is, would it be that inefficient to switch to hot water and keep the radiators? Is that possible. Are there other radiators or new fangled radiators that would be more in the tradition of hour home? Any feedback, direction, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
John
