License question

several examples where "Plumbing and Heating" companies have installed baseboard HW systems. I was under the impression they could do the install but had to hire a person with a heating (B or S) license do the start up. Usually the plumbers will underbid us when it's a house that is BB only with no cool because they tack it to the plumbing aspect and are willing to take a little less to get the whole ball of wax.

    License question

I am a licensed plumber in New Jersey. Does any one know if my license is good to work in either Pennsylvania or New York? Where can I find this info out?

I have had no luck finding who to call or where to look.

    Thanks for your help.
  • Call the state,,,

consumer protection division you wish to do business in and ask them if they will honor your license. I have a CT license and I know NY said it was ok for once in a while but if I was going to do a lot of work there they'd want me to get a NY license. You should check on that yourself though. Don't go by what I'm saying, I may have talked to someone that was in a good mood that day. ;)

RI on the other hand, don't go there with out a RI license and if your not from RI good luck getting one. I called several times and could never even get the application for one. LOL...

    license

I dont know about PA, but NY doesnt have a state license. There're ones for NYC, county licenses as you head north (and I think for the Island), and then its a town/city by town/city situation, with some reciprocating to other towns. Some towns don't even require a license. It would be much easier if it was a state license.

Your best bet would be to call the local municipality where the job is located and find out.

    RILicences

License applications and info available on line here:

  • Thanks...

It was a while ago with the RI experience but I had a friend ask me about it just a few months ago and then tell me pretty much the same story from a more recent time. Appearances are that RI discourages out of staters. Maybe old people are gone and things have changed. Maybe they just hate CT. :(

    license

NY is a home rule state, and as such leaves the licensing requirements to 1st the local municipalities, then the county , then the state level. That I know of there is no push for a state license for either plumbing, or Electrical in NY. Be careful though a lot of the small cities (like Port Jervis NY) require licensing.
As far as PA, I have worked in Wayne &
    pike counties- no license.

    License

Does a plumbing license generally cover HVAC?
It really seems like two separate fields.
  • In CT,,,

anyways, a licensed plumber can install a boiler but that's it. Kind of a pet peeve of mine. They can install heat but I can't install plumbing. It's just not fair! :(

    building trades

In most territories in the building trades. Plumbers are plumbers. Then you have Steamfitters. Plumbers don't dare touch anything belonging to the fitters. Plumbers have their own plumbing work which does not include heat. Fitters do the heat and process work.
    Plumbers just plumb.

    News to me

Since when can someone with a P license install a boiler?

My understanding was that they could do the domestic piping but not any hydronic piping or wiring.

In jersey there is no heating license anyone can install heating systems. The state is working on a license but as far as i know it did not go through yet,and yes all plumbers install boilers. Also there is no license on gas piping anyone can do it.
  • Yet,,,

another good reason to stay away from Jersey...

    Juuust kidding! ;)
