Paul, with FHW heat you and mix and match almost anything. The key is proper sizing and installation. yOu must know what effect the installation will have on the rewt of the system and the flow rate. There is no reason why you can't fing the right heat emitter for the job at hand. Good luck.

Mixing single steel radiator with cast iron system

I'm looking to add some baseboard heating to a room that hasn't had it in the past. It's an appropriately-sized hot water system with a newish boiler (pumped) and all the existing radiators are cast iron. Due to the small size of this particular room a cast iron radiator is right out - I could potentially use cast iron baseboard but it looks like it would have to be the Slant Fin just due to the height restrictions and I'm not sure of the cost to have that sourced in my area (Chicago).

I'm wondering what the actual impact would be of installing steel baseboard (Myson / Runtal). I know that on the one hand they are 'compatible' with cast iron systems, but on the other hand the different thermal mass and rates of heating / cooling are substantial.

Does anyone have actual experience with an install like this? We're talking about a very small room that doesn't even have heat right now - so anything would be better. The room is on the first floor and will be used as a combination playroom and spare bedroom. It has large double doors to a currently heated room.

For reference I'm the homeowner. I generally do my own work for smaller jobs (disconnecting or installing small radiators) but hire pros for big jobs (relocating large cast iron radiators or installing / working on the AC).

    Thanks - Paul
