Used HE5 Weil Mclain install

Thanks for the reply. I am pumping away, the pump is ahead of the expansion tank even though it is on the return. I realize modern hydronics tells us to do this on the supply side. The instruction manual for this boiler (per the post below yours), shows the piping as I discussed in my post. I have very limited space on the supply side and wanted to see if anyone thinks I will have any problems. After looking at the WM install manual it's how they recomended it in the early 90's.

HE5 Weil Mclain
I am a retired installer a little rusty on hydronics. I am installing a used boiler for a low income friend. The pump is on the return so per Spirovents instructions I put the expansion tank on the return (suction side of pump) to achieve the pumping away set up. They recommend this as an alternate location. I also put the boiler water feed line above the expansion tank on the return. The spirovent is on the supply side. I did all of this so I wouldn't need to move the pump as I have limited space on the supply side. The main question I have is bringing the feed line into the return side. I know you don't want cold water in the return shocking the boiler. All though once it is filled it should not feed cold water into a running boiler unless there is a leak. There is a Honeywell pressuretrol control on boiler to shut down if pressure drops below 9 lbs. There is a hot water by-pass line 1/2" to keep the return water at a minimum temp of 140 degrees (before feed line enters return line). Does this installtion seem ok to you pros? If not there is a plug in the bottom of the spirovent would you rather I install the boiler feed into this and have it piped into the supply side?0 -
typically the feed tees into the xtank line and they both enter into the bottom of the autovent. if the pump is on the return, and the vent on the supply, it is backwards. You want to pump away from the x-tank / fill tie-in, or PONPC (point of no pressure change). Also, 1/2" is too small for a proper bypass...most are full line size or 1" at least...
