Municple geothermal

Some years ago I did some research to examine exactly what Bill is asking about. I found a company in Indiana? or Ohio? that did exactly that. Sorry I do not remember the name or if they are still in business.

The minimum design was in the realm of 200 tons of cooling/heating for the system to cash flow. The utility could collect on both meters. The water meters at each location measured the domestic and the heat pump use. The discharge water was collected and retested before sending back to the primary system.

Early planning this could be a big benifit in many ways.

    public water geothermal

    Wouldn't it be great if public water systems with their miles of underground piping could become the heat sink for geothermal. At each house 2 lines would be installed, a meter for domestic water and one for geothermal. The geothermal water would be circulated through the equipment with a common hydronic circulator and returned to the water main through the second water line. This would create new monies for the water system as they could charge a fee based on the gallons used heating and cooling as well as solve a large part of our fossil fuel dependencies.

    Public Utility for Geothermal

    In Utah we have some of that going on and so far results are very favorable. Seems to change the public water temp only a degree or so from what I hear. I am not directly involved with the project but sounds very promising.

    With all the cross conection concerns we have in NY (most of which are unfounded) I do not think it will ever fly here.
