It's been a year !! System 2000 bliler !!

In 2005 I burned 1264 gallons. Then new windows in 2006.. dropped to 1142. Then the boiler in 2007 dropped to 920. Also, my old boiler heated the water with a coil and I had no hot water tank .. so now the boiler is not running all the time heating water.

    It's been a year !! System 2000 boiler !!

    Hello All,

First I'd like to say many thanks to all of you who gave me advice on a new heating system. I settled on the System 2000, and here's my update after 1 year. So far I've been very happy with the boiler. We never seem to run out of hot water, and I saved over 200 gallons of oil vs the year before. I think I could have saved more, but my basement flooded and I had to leave the door open to pump water for a few days -- and silly me didn't drop the thermostat !!! Only negative is I'm sometimes getting a sulphur smell from the hot water. I had the rod replaced with an aluminum one, but the smell continues, however it does go away after a few minutes. Can the rod be removed completely to stop the smell ???

    Smell

Was the hot water tank and plumbing disinfected after the rod was replaced? It should be done with hydrogen peroxide or chlorine.

    Not wild

about aluminum rods. Lots of not so good stuff in aluminum residual, but thats a personal choice. Changing the rods may not help or, by adding or using dis similar rods (if theres two) can make it worse or not help either, but then again, it may. If it continues, possibly a powered anode could be in the cards. www.waterheaterrescue.com

    hard to tell

How lame was the previous boiler? Your saving may be incredible, or they may be nothing more than average.

    Oil Savings

My old boiler was a Weil Mclain .. one of the blue one's. In the past 2 years I've added new windows and the boiler. I just checked my oil deliveries on line .. I'm down 344 gallons (2005-06 vs 2007-08) .. I'm paying $4.89 now for oil here in the Northeast, and that's a savings of $1682. So I guess the investment is going to payoff for both, as I should re-coop the price of the boiler and the windows in a few years. Maybe this year I can save even more, since I will be watching the thermostats now with the price of oil!!

    No

I had the watersoftner folks come, they told me it was the rod. I had the heating company come, they said I needed to heat the water in the tank so they install a mixing valve at cost. Then the guy just came in and changed the rod (which looked rotted when he took it out), there was no cleaning done .. Guess that's why they went out of business!! Can you tell me how to get the tank cleaned?? Can I do it myself???

Sorry, don't have any idea of what to look for!! I'm assuming the dial on the front of the boiler will tell me the temp ... but I need basic instructions .. I'm curious now ..

    New Company

Try and find a company that has serviced and/or installed System 2000. You might want to call up Energy Kinetics and ask them (1-800-323-2066).

If the hot water storage tank came from EK it already had an aluminum rod in it. Water softeners are not anode rod friendly and shorten their life by up to half so should be checked every year and replaced as necessary.

The sulfur smell is generally caused by a reaction between non-harmful bacteria in the water and the rod. Raising the tank temp to 140º will generally kill the bacteria but an anti-scald mixing valve is a must if you do that.

I thought the hot water tank came from EK, .. I was under the impression the entire system was an EK system. I can post a picture and you can tell me. When I asked the installer why the name was not on the tank, he said they don't all come that way. The rod he removed was magnesium, and an aluminum one was installed. I did see and ask that much. Rod which was removed looked rotted .. about 3 feet in length.

    DHW tank

Ron, your hot water storage tank is one supplied by EK. It's a 12 year glass lined.

The rod can be completely removed but it's not recommended because you will loose your protection the rod is there for. Your tank will not last very long without the rod.

Try changing the rod to a Zinc/aluminum that should solve your problem.
