    A few variables

Bock is one of the best water heaters but it still has more stand by losses than an indirect. The bock has it's own burner so an additional annual service and over time it will wear out and leak. Most indirects have lifetime warranties. The stand by losses are very low. The boiler will like having some heat now and then through the summer it will stay cleaner. I vote for the indirect. On the other hand Bock is one of the best and I bet you haven't had to put much money into the Riello, they are tough.

HB Smith 8 series 4L with a riello 40 oil burner. The mectron 3M came off a Ford oil fired hot water heater that was leaking so I dont know how old the burner is.

    The Smith 8 series

is already tapped for an indirect, or at least the current versions are. Check the I$O manual to be sure. Is this a steam or hot-water system?
