This is a doc that may help explain a thermal desuperheater.
They were not normally cost affective if there was a fossil fuel (gas or oil) available.
The ROI was too long for anything other that using it instead of an electric water heater.
And then, if it ever failed and had to be replaced, it ate up all of the savings, and then some.

A customer just asked me about a
device to heat hot water that uses the heat pump hot vapor to heat the water. I remember a long time ago a product that you could add to your A/C or heat pump but have not seen it in a while. Anyone out there know what he is talking about? WW

ClimateMaster too
The hot gas rejected during the condenser's A/C cycle passes through a freon-to-water HX and a circ transfers the heat-energy to the DHW storage tank. Might as well bank in the tank than dump to the sump (earth).0 -
Here is a nice unit, your speaking of:
Site also explains install and savings gained fairly well

It's a heat pump
connected to a water storage tank. Coils around the tank put heat energy extracted from the space into the water.
Electric elements made up the difference when demand was higher than the HP could deliver.
Genius idea IMHO.
