    Equivalent feet of gas pipe

This house has a gas meter with 1-inch pipe feeding the house. There are three elbows from the meter to the basement with a total five foot pipe run to where a Tee will
feed the pipe run to the boiler.

The intention is to install a gas burner that will burn 140,000 BTU/hr. The other gas appliances burn 170,000 btu/hour if they are all running (dryer, 65K HW heater, stove/oven). So I need a total of 310K of natural gas. Using a 1-inch feed to the boiler (through a tee, two elbows and 10 feet of pipe) should do the job, but the margin for capacity is a bit tight. Can I run a 1-1/4 pipe from the tee to give me a little extra margin? Or would it have to be 1-1/4" from the meter for that to make a difference?

    Thanks

    Tables available

1" is fine if your furthest appliance is within 40'.If it's further google "gas line sizing". All the tables are available as well as instructions on how to use them. I don't have my code at home, got the 40' off a City of Newark site.

    First things first....

Has a REAL heat loss been done?

That would be MY starting point. Find out if the loads are needed before just "boiler plating" a job.

You'll be amazed at how over sized some old installs were, and what is actually needed.

Pipe and fittings cost more than ever. If you get the equipment sized properly...you may be able to save yourself a ton of dough...and help to lower the cost of heating the spaces, plus find that 3/4 pipe just might be enough. Added bonus...you'll be able to bid it lower than anyone making a WAG, AND look like a hero when it costs the owners a lot less to heat than they anticipated. Chris

The system is steam and sized perfectly. The install is just three years old.

I'm a home owner. I won't be doing the gas piping, install or combustion tuning. I just like to know all the details before getting the job done. I have had my share of untrained "pros" and by knowing my facts, it makes it possible to judge whether a pro knows what they are talking about.

    Gas Meter

One other thing. does the gas meter Have the capacity rating for 310000 BTUH. Slim chance everything will run at once. But it is possible.

Good point. I just noticed that the label specifies that the meter capacity is 250 CF/H, so it isn't big enough. Thanks for raising this point.

Basically that equates to 250,000 BTUH using 1000btu for a CF of NG. Up grade the meter to a higher capacity. Why chance it, unless you want to monitor appliance usage.

There is a chance that those appliances can run at the same time in the heating season, if you have a spouse who is a multi tasker.
