1) wheel
2) controlled combustion0 -
I'll guess...
In OUR industry I would have to say,
#1. Controlled combustion
#2. The thermister. Think of all the NOW possible functions that can be monitored because some one found the correlation between temperature and resistance could be tracked and used to control all other functions...including telling the controlled combustion to raise and lower itself! JCA0 -

1: fire

Runners up:
3: discovery of oil
4: Air conditioning, which has cost us dearly by allowing those who 'govern' us to stay in DC for far too long each year while sucking the public's teats.0 -

Sorry Mr. Yates, One item is not enough, to qualify for the price you need two, please try again.0 -
Computer and Internal Combustion Engine
would be my two guesses.
My wife would say "Grey's Anatomy" and "Lip-Gloss". I love that woman. You'll notice that the question doesn't matter to her.

OK, to be serious...
Ok, I'm sticking with fire and the ability to control fire. That has separated homo sapiens from the rest of the creatures. We've been striving to get a better grip on controlling that fire ever since those first attempts. Mod-cons and the emerging oil hi-eff condensing furnaces & boilers are the latest efforts at 'greening' up the control of fire. Solar fits in nicely too as the ultimate control of fire!
Sir John Harrington in the 1500's altered the course of history and set the stage for saving more lives than all of medicine's advances throughout all of recorded history - to this day & that's one heck of an achievement. The loo, or water closet, or crapper, or toilet - if you will - opened the door and led to the advent of modern sanitary plumbing that has enabled humanity to extend lifespans while giving us a quality of life we often take for granted. But then, I am a PAH (Plumber at Heart), so this is a natural choice for me.0 -
