Steam boiler manufacturer

I've always been partial to the Burnham Independence, the rep has helped me out every time I had any issues, which have been few. If only they would put a power gas burner on the Megasteam!!!!!!!!! That would be the winner.

Steam boiler manufacturers
I would like opinions on which company makes the highest quality steam boiler (residential, nat gas). I'm not a big fan of Weil McPlug, but their not bad for gas. Thanks.0 -
I'd use
the Smith G-8. Its wet-base/power burner construction gives it a thermal efficiency about 6% better than the typical atmospheric gas boiler. Plus, you can switch it to oil firing if the price per BTU tilts the other way.

steamer
You need to adjust your attitude about Weil McLain....the SGO with a Riello gas burner is as good as it gets in my book. And when gas goes as sky high as oil...and it will eventually..you can convert back very easily.

Can you explain why you think the Riello gas burner is better than the Carlin EZ-Gas for the WM SGO. I'm about to convert and want to make sure I make the best choice. The Carlin seems more servicable.

I dont usally jump in
on boiler bashimg but.... i have benn installing W+M for over 20 yrs now and seems most of the time it was never set up properly! no matter how you look at it you cant blame a boiler for operator error, But the always do

riello
Thanks for the comments David....how ture!!!
I prefer the Riello due to field experience. I have never used a Carlin so I can't comment. As to serviceability, the Riello is easy, once you've been trained. They are extremely reliable and rarely give any trouble. (in my experience)

May I jump this thread
and ask about Pennco boilers? My brother bought a house with single pipe steam and a recently installed Pennco boiler. The previous HO gave him the invoice for the change out (r&r) and it was really low. Especially for NYC.
Are they that inexpensive? Are they reliable?0 -
Pennco is another line from ECR internatonal. I know them for their utica boilers the Penncos look like the same boilers in a different jacket. Anyone else out there who can confirm this?Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

ECR International Brands
Dunkirk, Sears Kenmore, Bryant, Carrier, Payne, Lennox and Pennco are all ECR brands. Call ECR International at (800) 241- 5501 and they will verify any questions that you have.0 -
my only question
is in your experience, are they good quality boilers? I don't think ECR will be objective answering my question.
My other concern is that the last owner may have had an inexperienced handyman off the street install the boiler and maybe installed it incorrectly...It was that inexpensive.
If the boilers are really cheap then maybe the installer was qualified and made a profit. If it is not, then I want to urge my brother to have it looked at because the installer either lost money or cut corners.

I think I got it
I'm gonna go with trying to sell the WM Eg gas steam boiler, just wish there was a three pass or condensing option, but I realize the market is very small. There happens to be a fair ammount of residential steam around here so it looks larger to me than it does with respect to a national or worldwide market....Thanks for all the info...it has really helped a lot...Greg

boiler manufacturer
this entire thread has been about steam boilers with power flame burners and you want to go with and EG ???? Good boiler but a world apart from an SGO with a Riello or Carlin or whatever.....

Greg, you should look at this again
check the thermal efficiency of the atmospheric boiler as opposed to the wet-base unit. For the EG it's 82-83% if you're lucky, for the Smith G-8 it's 86%. I realize this doesn't sound like much of a difference, but gas isn't getting any cheaper.....
