HARD WATER QUESTION

Use one or two of these, they do work, but are expensive.
Originally designed to keep built up on ice machine plates at bay, now have a new purpose.

    HARD WATER QUESTION

My cousin wants to install a tankless water heater (Rennai, Takagi) but he has a hard water problem. He doesn't like water softeners and was wondering if there are any filtering systems out there that would remove the minerals from the water. He also has hot water baseboard and will soon be replacing his boiler due to mineral buildup and efficiency.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Tankless Not A good Idea

In this case do not go with a tankless as hard water is definitely a problem. The tolerances are too tight inside a tankless and flow can get restricted quickly. Even the deliming process can be tough on the copper heat exchangers.

I have hard water and even with a softener I took it out in 1 1/2 years. Takagi was good about a pro-rated replacement but warned about hardness and flow issues. In my case I believe it was the pressure differential that created problems as I am on a well.

Tankless are not the cure all do all especially with water quality and pressure issues.

I take it you have used these? (for how long and on how many water heaters) Ice machines and water heaters are two different animals.

Brian, if you are going to use a tankless, best to consult with the manuf. for the recommendations for your water quality and warranty issues.

I agree with Rich I was a service provider for Rinnai and found water quality issues to be a definite concern with tankless water heaters, add well water to the equation and it is a crap shoot imo.

    Two Questions

    1.Pressure loss across filter?

    2.Cost of replacement filter cartridge???

    I'd wonder how

the boiler ended up with a mineral build up? Unless the system has a leak, the initial fill water should still be in there and no additional water should have entered.

I doubt the original fill of 20 gallons or so could have limed up the boiler?

If so, for what ever reason Hercules Sizzle can be used to take care of hard water build up.

Pressure drop is virtually nil, it's a venturi type fitting. AquaPure lists the cost for the Scale Stopper at $100. Replacement cartridges are $41. Supply house may charge less.

Their literature gives an estimated life cycle of 4-6 months but field experience has shown that the average is closer to 12 months. We've been selling them as an addon for quite a few years and feedback has been very positive.

    Jim answered my questions.

For me with flow of 2-5 gals on a cottage on-demand, they lasted the summer. Homes I'm sure is more like 3 months.

They do work, like the everpure cartridges for ice machines, they coat and keep the surface clean while the the hardness properties stay suspended.

I've noticed Noritz has one as an option in thier product line which is bigger like a 10" cartridge filter size.

What they say in thier lit:
"Protects your unit from lime scale build up and corrosion. The compact size allows for easy installation"
