Suburban myth, disproved by studies.

  • What an experience,

I`ve worn glasses 30 years, since getting the computer my sight got worse. Eye Dr. says because of my age(49), I now need bi-focals.
You young fellows take care, stairs can be a challenge to this new experience if it comes earlier(wonder how I know) LOL!

    Yup

I went from no glasses ever to tri-focals at age 45 and the stairs are biggest challange except maybe trying to get out of the box van.
  • Hey Bruce,

would running boards help?, or will you fall flat on your face(like me),,,for awhile customers will likely think I`m loaded ,, gotta get my story straight! LOL.

I'll be 55 this month and have had bifocals for about 10-12 years. I gave up on the trifocals and never could get used to them. I ended up with reg. bifocals and had the line lowered and finally got a pair I could tolerate. Even now I dont need them except for the computer and reading and can do most things without the reading part. Good Luck.

I'll be 56 this month. Worn glasses for about 45 yrs. Never had Bifocals, but have had Progressive lenses and there is no problems with stairs or any of that.
  • Funny thing,

I know some 85 year old smokers never had cancer either, my lenses are "progressive" and b/f,,, but I still have probs with stairs.
    Diffr`nt strokes I guess.

Started wearing glasses 52 years ago. Went to bifocals at some point in time, too long ago to remember, then to trifocals. Tried progressives, my wife loves hers, but couldn't get used to them. Back to trifocals. Still end up reading without them.

It's tough to read the security code sometimes because some of the letters look the same, lower case i and l and upper case O and zero look the same. Gives me a headache.

Progressives are a huge improvement over bi/trifocals. Continuous variation over the lens creates a multifocal so you can use the middle part to olook at middle distance. But you lose sharp vision on the sides.

Some people have trouble getting used to them, but that is often because of cheap lenses. Some optometrists sell cheap lenses at high prices, because most customers don't know any better.

On the other hand, it is possible to buy by mail if you know or can measure your exact PD (pupillary distance) and have done some research. You can then get top-of-the-line progressives like Physio or Definity (computer-controlled surfacing on both front and back of lens) for less than $300. These will cost twice that from an optometrist.

PS Re the original post, computer use cannot make your eyes worse; that is an old wives' tale. But age certainly can make your eyes worse, because you lose the lens flexibility to focus at different distances.
  • Progressive Lens

I love my progressive ultra slim Physio lens. If it were not for modern technology I would be wearing glass trifolcals that weigh a mear 3 pounds. My plastic glasses (is that an oxynmoron?) only weigh about an ounce. I love it!

My optomotrist insisted that I wear my progressives for one month prior to making any judgement about liking them or not. I'll admit that on week one I was ready top leave them at her office.... but now, 6 years later, I still love them!

My eye doctor said that maintaining a certain focal dictance for extended periods of time without a break will make my eyes get lazy and I will need stronger reading glasses. The muscles also get weak as we get older. So, in a sense, the computer has made me get stronger glasses. It would have been the same if I was an accountant with a ledger on my desk all day long :-)

So, without my glasses I am nearly legally blind. With them I simply make excuses why I trip over things!!

ALl in all, it's bettere to get older then the alternative,

Thanks Dave, I appreciate that, but I stopped liking birthdays years ago, although I guess the alternative isn't so hot.
