indirect vs gas fired instantanious

Baxi offers it with the HT 1.33, a very smart boiler. A bit over looked as far as condensers go imo.
Siemens makes the P.I.D controller and offers more control options than anything else I've put in (TT,Munchkin, Buderas, Ultra). A bit harder to set up than the others but it has been a real good boiler.

indirect vs instantanious
To produce domestic hot water in a normal residential application.
What is more efficient ?
a. gas fired, wall hung instantanious
b. indirect, connected to a gas fired mod/con

I would thinmk
the mod con indirect combo is more efficient. The indirect tank is insulated on the top and the bottom and all the sides so the stand by losses are really minimal. You get the higher 90%+ combustion efficiency passed on through from the boiler, while the tankless is down around 80%. I think the tankless is a step up from a standard gas water heater because the stand by losses in the standard are so great with the flu pipe running up the middle of the tank siphoning warm air up the chimney the whole time the water in the tank is hot, which is all the time. I think that then the next step up is the mod con indirect combo. WW

tank vs tankless
So your opinion is that the benefits of combustion efficiency outweigh the need to keep a volume of water hot?
Thanks for the reply,

I don't understand your reply. Could you restate it please. WW

Sorry
I was trying to say.....
The benefits of condensing technology outweigh the fact that you need to keep the indirect hot water heater @ 140*.
Are the gas fired instantanious heaters efficiency's in the 80% range?
Keith0 -
Yes
I use the Smart tank by tri tube mostly and it's insulation is thick sprayed in foam. There is very little stand by loss when storing hot water. WW

I like the
TriangleTube indirect as well, 1/2 degree stand by heat loss per hour. However depending on which mod/con boiler you go with you may have the option of a Legionella function, you /the installer inputs the desired rate of function of the boiler to fire up to 180* for a certain amount of time. You can program this for daily, weekly or monthly firing. Eliminating the need for 140* temps 24/7. Unless 140* is what you need it to be.
Not to split hairs but instantaneous water heaters these are not they are continuos flow water heaters. If you are comparing gpm production between an indirect and tankless water heater, there is NO comparison the indirect will out perform the tankless "no questions asked".

Phase 3
I currently have a TR45. Very happy with the performance.
The standby loss does seem to be minimul.
There is probably a handful of times per year where I need the hot water capacity the TR45 can delivere. It's nice that it's there when I need it but at today fuel price it's not much of a sacrifice to do without.
I was not aware of the Legionella function of some Mod/Con's. Who offers that?

Like everything.....
"It depends".
If you can get a tankless/instantaneous right next to where you need to use the water, and your not trying to do rain shower heads or anything more than they are designed for....It CAN be a good way to make hot water.
If you want to put it in the basement, and feed a bathroom/kitchen on the other side of the house...not so much.
I have seen them piped into a storage tank(aquabooster) with a control to send the water back to them, if the temp. drops too low. That is a hot water machine....but in the end costs as much...if not more than an indirect.
Trying to keep Mama happy, if she likes to take baths, is the dividing line for me.Bathtubs hold and need a lot of hot water. If you can get the instantaneous right next to the bathroom, you stand a chance to stay in good graces. If not...an indirect and a timed re-circ(is that redundant ?)pump would be my choice. JMHO. Questions answered
If the instantanious performance isn't there and I already own the indirect, I'll leave well enough alone.
Thanks for the reply's,
Keith
