oil fired water heater adjustments

That doesn't make any sense? A burner can't suck more oil than it is suppose to only not enough. Could have been a bad new nozzle or it just wasn't tuned properly which based on what you are saying wasn't touched at all.

If the pump was two line, having the return valve shut would cause the pump to leak out its seal and dump oil everywhere. Usually the pump needs to be repaired if it has a blown seal.

    oil fired water heater adjustments

I am having trouble adjusting my water heater. It was just installed but I kept the old gun. It was running with a .65 80 nozzle and the unit calls for a .75 80. The new nozzle burns like crazy and soots up quickly. The old nozzle is much more cooperative. What do I set the vent for on the side of the gun and why is the new nozzle causing so much soot?

    Old burner

You first need to make sure the old blast tube fits the water heater chamber it sould be about 1/4 inch back from inside edge of chamber. the new nozzle is larger and requires more air, this sould be set up with a test kit.

    water heater adjustmetn

this is nothing to mess with Steve, if you are not an oil technician. Improper adjustment not only leads to smoke and soot but carbon monoxide as well. Bite the bullet and get an oil heat pro in there to adjust that burner. ASAP!!!

    oil fired water heater fixed

I did bite the bullet and got an expert. Found out that this is a 2 pipe system and requires that both valves be open. The second going to boiler and water heater was closed there for it was getting too much oil. This was causing the great amount of smoke.

    Not True,Jim

a Cleancut or similar pump can develop pressure in excess of 300PSI to the nozzle port with a plugged return line and not blow the pump seal.I've seen it a few times.

That would be an excellent reason to never use that make pump, especially with a two line system. Two line piping on a single appliance is bad, but two lines on multiples is a nightmare!! This installation sounds like an open door to continuous problems. Scary!!!

oilburner, thanks to all for your comments

the unit is a beckett, and was piped with 2 pipes, the problem was that the second valve was shut. the seal broke on the first one and we had to replace it, then it was still happening because we didn't realize about the second valve. once it was opened it was fine. too much oil, too much smoke. the only thing i didn't like was that he stuck the tube all the way in instead of keeping it a 1/4 in back. again thanks for everyones help.

    When you say

When you say he stuck the tube all the way in, is it a welded flange tube made for the unit which is ok. Or is it a universal flange on a tube that needs to be measured? If it is universal and is in too far the end of the tube will eventually burn off.

    blast tube

It is a beckett with a home depot type of blast tube. I wasn't there, but my freind was and he said he pushed it all the way in which puts it at least 3/4" past the lining. I didn't like it, but thats how this pro did it.
