electric hot water versus tankless

I have a 3 year old Dynatherm FP24 boiler with a coil, feeding an electric hot water heater which basically acts as a storage tank for extra capacity. I'm looking for opinions on shutting off the boiler in the summer and allowing the electric hot water to do the work, with oil currently at 4.15 a gallon. Any negative side effects for the boiler sitting cold for several months? Thanks
