fireplace inserts

With my Jotul wood stove insert. Get one that has a connection for outside air, it makes a huge difference, but every one will tell you it won't make much difference. You will probably need to get your flue lined also. You will save a lot of money on your heating bill and you will have a really warm spot in the house to get the chill out of your bones.
Thanks, Bob Gagnon

anybody
have any opinions or recomendations on fireplace inserts.
I have a nice masonry fireplace. Although it does make some heat, we just burned it cause it's nice. I don't think we've been all that interested in getting much heat out of it.
I think that attitude is changed.
We'd like to burn it with the doors open with a screen when we're in the room, but shut the door when we're done or when we're not sitting there. I saw one on the internet that would do that, but I haven't been able to find it again.
Any opinions, recommendations, or experiences would be appreciated.0 -
heat vs. aesthetics
Those are your choices. If you want looks, get a vented gas log set that requires the damper be removed or blocked wide open. If you want heat, you will need a sealed combustion direct vent, which means the glass stays on.
I recommend HHT inserts but most brands are good quality. You can start here: www.fireplaces.com

Thanks... I'm looking for a wood burning insert, though.

Fireplace Insert...
Before you go for an insert check out your options for retrofitting a Rumford fireplace. Here's a website: http://www.rumford.com/
You'd be amazed at how efficient these can be.
Best of luck.
