Red Rosin building paper is a traditional (and better in my opinion) product for use under strip flooring whether it's heated or not.

    agreed...

Have both tar paper and red rosin under hardwood in this house. (Neither heated.) The rosin paper floor is far less noisy. However, tar paper can be more effective than rosin paper in keeping the hardwood separated from moisture/humidity (hardwood in rooms over damp spaces, etc.).

    Short answer: red rosin.

    tar paper

I have been told to never use tar paper under radiant because you will be able to smell it when floor is heated

    Tar Paper

Good Evening! In Dan's book " Hydronic Radiant Heating" he mentions that tar paper and horsehair both put off an unpleasant odor.

    Why?

I've always read that you should'nt use tar paper over radiant. I'm in my second home with oak strip flooring and don't know what i'm missing but I don't see the need for any kind of paper. I installed laminate in a concrete condo last summer with a 1/8 black rubber underlay that was very smelly coming off the roll and think it too would'nt be a good candidate floor infloor. It was great for sound deadening.
