NORA and Timmies books would be a Good thing..Jim Got a Federal Job paying him money he couldn't refuse..i do not blame him buh i was seeing it more like a benefit to our community..
no reinventing the Wheel...
Jim Has his Society of Mechanical Engineer certification hot in hand and used to teach the NORA classes..
in a rush right now.. Buh Siggys Book would be the ticket..
the Caleffi 123 series so far all worth an Honourable mention..:) did you get the Grundfoss Radiant Handbook ?

i would 'Help" with it a bit
and You Wayne Fred and i could spin things together and apart in a light bleam on different burners at separate work stations so that the guys would feel "Comfortable" with that part of education where the rubber meets the road.. *~/:)

Thinking of starting new business
Common lament in this neck of the woods as well as your neck of the woods is that, "by golly, there just aren't any good techs out there to hire." After myself chanting this mantra for several years the light bulb went off. Can you say "Opportunity"? Why not take a dilema and make a profit? Looking at starting an in-depth, hands-on, intensive school for heating techs here in Fairbanks. Anticipate covering everything from oil and gas burner service and troubleshooting to hydronic piping and control wiring. Get some of my local wholesalers to come up with some equipment for a lab. Maybe use Siggy's book as a text book for the piping, and NORA or NATE books for the oil burning stuff, perhaps Timmie M's gas books for the gas side of things. I figured, "Why not"? Currently I train my own crew two days a week, and found I actually really enjoy the teaching aspect; and I'm paying them to learn. What if someone paid ME to learn? I envision a multi-week course, at the end of which I could hire the best and the brightest for my own company, and send the rest to the other contractors out there. I have already spoken with several contractors, and to a person they said they would jump at the chance to hire someone who is versed in service and piping/controls. Hey, I don't want to turn wrenches forever! What courses or text books do you guys think would be relevant to this endeavor?

Grants...
There are a LOT of grant monies out there floating around for training and retraining.
First thing you should do is get YOURSELF certified as an instructor through a local community college. You need the credentials in order to teach. . It's not that hard to get them based on real world experience.
I'd help you with writing the cirriculum. Have lots of experience doing that, and yes, Siggys book is at the core of every class I teach.
Let me know if I can help Rocky.

You train an animal, you teach a person...
My background is in training but I'm currently in a customer service position for a distributor in hydronics, learning the ropes as I go.
I love, love, LOVE educating people, regardless of the subject; kudos for considering this step; if you ever want to talk about methods or get feedback on structure/format of lessons I'd be really excited to help out (and maybe learn a bit myself!).0 -
State of Alaska is flush
with oil revenue right now and to their credit, they go out of their way to try to send money to in-state endevours such as this. They really try to encourage local or State business; anything to keep Alaskan citizens working. I anticipate hitting them hard for grant monies, vocational rehabilitation funds, etc...
I would keep my existing heating company going to help fund this endeavor until it takes off. Will just have to entrust a larger portion of the "Day-to-Day" stuff to my excellent crew.
The unique thing here in Alaska is the large population of "bush" villages. I could easily envision teaching multitudes of village "maintenance" men who would go back to their villages in the bush to help keep their heating systems up and going.
As I progress along this path, I will undoubtably come begging and borrowing any ideas, texts, proceedures etc.
As an added plus, any trips to Taco, or Uponor, or any other cool training program now becomes a tax write-off. Imagine, hanging out with Barba now becomes tax deductable!
Wish me luck,
