Yes, you should install a check valve, but you need to drill a 1/8" or so hole in the check.
The piping arrangement you describe sounds very similar to a "heat trap" used to prevent gravity circulation.

If I have a recirc line with no circulator on it, do I need to install a check valve? Also if The hot water main goes across the basement cieling then down about three feet into a manifold and then back up acrooss the cieling, is it even possible to do without a pump? Thanks.0
