clean radiators

Do radiators ever need to be cleaned in a single pipe steam system? I've been told they fill with dirt over time which is why they get so heavy. Coul one use water and some sort of cleanser to flush them? Obviously this would require removing them one by one. Would this gain anything efficiency-wise or just lead to a mess and possible leaks when reconnecting things?
What could one use to break up the old dry gunk without contaminating the system?

If enough dirt gets in
so they bang from water being held up in them, I'd flush them out. But as long as they're working properly, I'd leave them.
