    You old farts...

I now realize I may be too young to post on The Wall. ;-)

    Best I ever saw:

2005 Metallica w/Godsmack @ Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Both bands put on a great show.

    Runner up:

1997 Black Sabbath Ozzfest '97 at Metrodome. Up to that point, I never thought I would get to see Black Sabbath perform, though Bill Ward was absent.

    The Small Club Vibe

The small club vibe is so true. The best show I ever saw was a bluesman out of Houma, LA named Tab Benoit. I saw him at a club so small it had no dressing rooms. I'm sure the 400 people there broke every fire code in the city. He had to get ready on his tour bus and walk in the front door of the club to get on stage. This show was rocking so hard no one wanted it to end. After his encore, the crowd is chanting, "Tab, Tab, Tab", and he says, "Y'all want another one?" I'm convinced this was compeltely unplanned because he plays about six different guitars during his show. After he asks the question and the crowd goes nuts, he has to search through five guitar cases that have already been packed up to find the one he wants and then proceeds to play two or three more before walking out the front door and getting on his bus to leave.

Back in my youth, the Frank Zappa concerts at Madison Square Garden were always great, as were some Yes and Moody Blues concerts. But believe it not, the best one I have ever attended was just a few years ago.

In Patchogue, on the Isle of Long, there is an old movie theater that was converted to a performing arts center. My wife and I saw tickets go on sale for Electric Light orchastra at the center so we snapped-up a set.

Oh my, ELO at full volume in such a tiny theater was an amzing experience! We were only a few rows back so the group was no more than 50 feet away. And the previous week we saw Steely Dan at the Jones Beach Theater, who weren't too shabby either.

The last concert we saw was Donna Summer - the old gal can still belt 'em out!

    Old you say?

Even with my considerable mileage, I can still bang heads with any 20-30 year old!

If it's too loud, you're too old :-)

    Best....

Best concert had to be Jethro Tull in Pittsgurgh @ the IgooI think 1980... He just put on an awesome show... very high energy and anlike alot of bands sounded great live.

VERY close second was Bob Dylan at red rocks (denver) with the new kid.. Tom Petty.

Had seats 5 rows back dead center at eye level. They both sang several songs together mid afternoon, sunny.. very cool.

    My favorite....

1979,Cape Cod Colosseum(do they still play there?)Al Dimeola backing up Santana.

Dimeola played as the crowd was walking in, and they were amazed at what they missed. While the roadies were breaking down the stage...he sat on a stool and played by himself for about 20 minutes.

I was completely blown away...having watched him play with a band for about 40 minutes without a break.

Like J.B. any Buffet show from Labor Day Weekend in New England, and my first show....Alice Cooper doing the "Welcome to My Nightmare" tour...1976. Concert trains were the way to get to Boston Garden back then.Bare bones party train cars were pretty impressionable for a 14 year old back in the day. Chris

    Tab Benoit

He's got a website out there somewhere, and I'd suggest you see him if at all possible. His shows absolutely rock. Get there early. You'll probobly catch him sitting at the bar knocking back a few and he'll be glad to chat and maybe take a request or two (my fav is his cover of "Drowing on Dry Land"). You won't be sorry.

Fire up the \"Wayback\"machine Mr. Peabody...

Judy Collins at any of the concerts I've seen her at, 10+ years ago at Waterloo Village, NJ she totally stunned the crowd with her version of "Send in the Clowns". Just her and a piano. When the song ended, the crowd was dead silent for at least 90 seconds, then exploded into a standing ovation that went on "forever". She did "Memories" as her encore. Beyond belief.

The Moody Blues anywhere. Harry Chapin, with and without the band. Diana Krall...WOW! The Lovin' Spoonful; before he fried his brain, John Sebastian was incredible. Dylan anywhere, anytime. Michael Franks, Pat Mehtheny, Chuck Loeb, Bob James. Jimmy Buffett is always great. Gordon Lightfoot at Expo Montreal in 67. John Fogerty, with & without Creedence. The Kingston Trio,Peter, Paul & Mary, The Brothers 4 for "sanitized" folkie stuff, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk, Phil Ochs for down & dirty folkies. The Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Enough! Anyone seen my Geritol?

    Hey Bill

Here's a story for you. A friend of mine lives on a small lake in CT. One evening he and his wife take the canoe out for a paddle and hear singing. They paddle over to a house on the lake for a listen. It's Judy Collins practicing with her piano player. Free Concert!!!

Well , I saw some of the best that my time had to offer...

    Rush...Moving Pictures - blown away

    Queensryche ( Empire ) Y. Malmsteen opening - amazing

Blue Murder ( John Sykes ) - Tony Franklin on bass ...very cool...and Hammerjacks was my favorite place to go.

Dream Theater ( Into Infinity , Scenes from a memory ) - John Petrucci is amazing

    Mr. Big ( Gilbert / Sheehan ) - insanity

I wish I could go back in time and see Kansas and ELP...I'll bet they sounded awesome. -M

    Great story!

Lucky for your friends. I saw her last at the State Theater in New Brunswick, NJ. She had just lost her son, and her grief showed. One of the greatest singers ever. I think she is semi-retired now, but she may show up at local folk festivals, or small theaters. "Suite:Judy Blue Eyes", by Crosby, Stills & Nash was supposedly about her. Judy Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, and Joan Baez all are Greenwich Village 1960's folkie survivors, great listening anytime.

    Bill

A few years ago John Sebastian did a free concert here in Port Jefferson NY. I sat in the first row, inches away (this was very small, no stage) during the concert John sat next to my son and sang him a lullaby, it was an incredible night. John is very approachable, we spoke. He may be burnt out but in that intimate setting he was great.

  • my mother in law loves tab to death.

i'm with you on the small club vibe. best concert ever has been any one of the something like 13 times I've seen Clutch live in small clubs. great shows, everyone loves 'em.
