Our Latest Boiler Install
Here are some photos of our latest boiler install with two 60 gal. indirects tied together as one. The old oil fired boiler (the pictures of which have been lost) had a tankless coil which was not providing enough hot water for the family. We had replaced the old Taco mixing valve with a Honeywell to improve the temperature control and increase output, but it was only a matter of time...

Wayne, that's the air separator
it's B&G's version of the microbubble/Spirovent type. You can hear it sending air to the tank. A very nice piece which we've used on a bunch of systems now. Next to that is a Taco 0012 primary loop circulator, which is larger than we usually use but those indirects take a lot of secondary flow, especially when the 75-gallon tub is being filled and a shower or something else is also in use. The larger primary circ helps send some residual warm water back to the boiler return inlet.
The O's are playing true to form.

Venting issues
we looked for a good place to vent a mod-con and could not find any suitable place. The chimney height put us pretty close to the max allowable developed vent pipe length of several candidates- this house is three stories with a roof space and very high ceilings. Sidewall was out due to insufficient snow line clearance. We well remember the Ocean City Days Inn CO tragedy, and nothing like that is allowed to happen on our watch.
This is the most efficient gas-fired setup that could be installed in this particular house and be expected to work safely and reliably, no matter what the weather. And if the price per BTU tilts the other way, the HO can have us switch it to oil firing. The chimney has a brand-new stainless-steel liner.
We also changed the size of the main zone circ to improve circulation. This system was installed when forced hot-water was in fashion, so we don't have those low-resistance gravity pipes and it's easy to under-pump, which is what happened here. Each rad on the original hot-water system has a screw-slot balancer on the return. The previous system was gravity scorched-air- we found some of its vestiges.

Nice clean install Steamhead
Kudos again!0 -
What do people do with so much water? Why not use a commercial hot water heater instead of an indirect?0 -
Well, if you're gonna store that much hot water
it helps to not have a flue running thru the tank, constantly passing cool basement air which cools the tank when the burner is off. Also, the thermal efficiency of the boiler is much better than that of a water heater when the burner is on, due in part to more heat-transfer surface. That's why we like indirects.
The indirects were sized for a 75-gallon master bath Jacuzzi, kitchen, laundry and three other bathrooms.

Thanks!
Gordo did much of the piping artistry.
