LWCO Replacement Question

Al is correct, just clean it. I like to replace the old lwco drain valves with the new style ball valve, now is the time to see if the 4 screws will come out. Also, DON'T tighten the switch screws too much, the plastic breaks easily, and do note the "Top" on the switch and most importantly test the switch to see it shut the burner off.

The LWCO on my 7 year old home boiler is a MM 67 float switch type. We bought the home last fall, and I doubt that the LWCO has ever been taken apart for cleaning. It works fine, but I'd bet it's pretty crusty.

I was able to pick up a brand new MM 67 on eBay for $40 figuring I'd just replace the whole thing before next winter . . . but the LWCO on the boiler would be difficult to remove as a unit . . . big steam pipes are in the way of swinging it. Should I . . .

    1) . . . just clean out the existing housing really well and replace the switch and drain valve with parts from the new unit? . . . or . . .

    2) . . . cut the small pipe connecting the old one and use some sort of a union to enable me to install the new unit whole?

Just take apart the one you have and clean it out really well. If it works, there's no reason to change it out. Keep the other one on hand in case the existing one fails. Just remember to use a new gasket and clean out all the crusties.
