Does Smith make the GT model or is it a rebranded boiler?

Safest Gas Boiler For Garage Installation

I had someone ask me a question about a safe gas boiler installation in their garage. Present heating system is oil and is installed near the rear wall of a two car garage. This is a whole house heating system with a tankless coil for hot water. The garage is on a separate zone and the rest of the house is on the other zone. The garage is used to store and work on two cars from the 1960's. These older cars do not have sealed fuel systems and there is the possibility that gas is vented into the air. The person wanted to know if there is a safe way to convert to gas given the present usage of the garage. I said that I was not smart enough to know the answer but I am sure that there are people who do know the answer.

    Safe is relative -

I would lean towards an overhead radiant tube heater, one that is rated for hazardous locations, eg. draws combustion air directly from exterior. If something more conventional is needed - then most gas codes have provisions for the installation of appliances in a auto repair shop - generally requiring the appliance (and source of ignition) to be xx inches off the floor. Talk to your local inspector and get his/her viewpoint as well.

    a wall hung boiler....

would be best... one example would be a Smith GT...true sealed combustion. Not just brought into the cabinet.kpc
