viessmann atola

a long time customer of ours has just moved in to a new house and requested that I come out and give a price to replace "this rusted chimney". upon seeing the B-vent chimney it's safe to say it's not safe to vent thru. the chimny handles the venting for a a.o smith water heater and a viessmann atola boiler. the system was not runing due to a gas meter change out so I could not fire it and see what the operating temps were. but my concern is, the boiler is piped directly to 3 in floor zones, no by pass, no boiler protection, no primary/secondary. just out of the supply thru the floor and back to the return. I'm not a viessmann product expert but it seem that the atola is a cast iron boiler and should not have low water temps retuning to the boiler, am on on track here or is this some kind of super german boiler able to handle it ( I am german, so I am aware of our greatness. Ha) any info would be helpful.

Viessmann
The Atola is a cast iron gas boiler that would need some type of low water temp protection - I would use a Viessmann mixing valve with their control. The Vitola is a cast iron boiler (oil or gas) that does not have low return temp limitations. The Vitola IS the super boiler you envision the Germans making.0 -
rusted vent pipe
While the Atola is an awesome cast iron sectional gas fired atmospheric boiler, you are correct in that it should not be exposed to low return temperqatures directly. I also agree you probably may want to consider either a Viessmann HK-50 stand alone mixing valve controller or maybe a less expensive North American solution. BUT somethings got to be done or the vent pipe will just rust out again!! Reminds me of a muffler eating Civic I had once...0 -
Correct on all counts
The Atola's are basically the same boiler as the current Vitogas 50 series. They will live happily down to about 130 but below that you most definitely want to have some return temperature protection for maximum life out of the boiler.
The Vitola 200 or Vitola Bi-ferral as it was first known has no limitations on water temp. It is the M1 Abrams tank of the boiler world. If there is fuel to burn 100 years hence, there will probably still be a Vitola burning it then that is currently doing so right now.0
