I believe we have our 1st Triple Crown Winner in 30 years
when Big Brown trounces the Field at Belmont in a few weeks. I was at the last one in '78 with my Pop and Brother. When that duel between Affirmed and Alydar was over my brother, Bart, quipped: "...wow pop that was SOME race, huh?" My father, who had just judged the race, and had seen countless match races and great horses throughout the glory days of racing said: "THAT was the GREATEST race I have ever seen!!!!" He said this without breaking his stride nor even looking at my brother. Racing needs this bad ...real bad. Mad dog

Cool, I didn't get a chance to see the race,
so thanks for the info, I was wondering what had happened.0 -
Jerry Bailey who was commentating said...................
As B.B. exploded away from the pack at the Top of the Stretch: "....in 27 years of riding...I have NEVER seen a horse accelerate like that!" Barring a tragedy or freak accident, Big Brown will be only the 11th Triple Crown winner in Horse racing history...and I will have to update my website. Mad Dog

I have always been a huge fan of horse racing since going out to GG fields in SF to see the west coast group race, but after the recent deaths of great horses, I have really lost a lot of respect for the breeding of 'light boned' horses and the age at which they race. I am not sure if there is a chart or graph that shows deaths per year, but it would seem recently it has gone up. I really love these noble beasts, and it kills me to see them drop like this for a race. I am pulling for Big Brown to take the 3c, and will even watch the Belmont to see it happen, but I find myself just hopeing no horses drop. They are beautiful animals who deserve better chances of no dieing and still being able to race. Surely there must be a middle ground...

And Big Brown's owner
is a Bethpage lad. Crazy times at B.K. Sweeney's, Matt.Retired and loving it.0 -
Big Brown
I'd like to see a race, where the owners race against the trainers, and the breeders, while somebody sits on them, and beats them with a stick.0 -
Is that an enticement....DANO???????

As someone who grew up on the track
and being a racing family...we all love the animal first and it kills us when a horse needs to be put down. Actually, it is only 1 in about 1000 races that a horse "breaks down" Thoroughbreds have always had thin legs and that is why they can "book" like no other breed. They do really thrive on racing and live for it. Last, if it weren't for horse racing, we would have almost ZERO use for horses on Modern times...we would see a few in zoos. Mad Dog

Tantamount to the silly analogy about world leaders.............
getting in to a boxing ring to settle internat'l disputes....ain't happenin. Whips are used very, very sparingly - actually. If you spent ANY time on a racetrack
in this country (note - USA)you would see what I mean. The days of Brutes like Bobby Ussery (1960-1970s) are long past. Mad Dog

I would never dispute the love the trainer / owner feels for their horses, but from what I have been reading (Time, The week) it would seem that selective breeding for even lighter skeleton mass has been going on, and there is always the young age factor. I certainly have no first hand experience, but have followed the more in depth coverage. I think far too many people own horses just for the pleasure of doing so for them to ever be a zoo thing...that's part of our decision to have acreage...to have andalusians or maybe even frisians. (yes, we are aware of the prices but figure if we are going to make the investment, we should get what makes us happy) I do commend the excellent treatment these fine horses are shown...they live better than a very large percentage of Americans.

My daughter,,,
rides. Hunter/Jumper and Dressage. So I have to disagree on the zoo thing. I do find it interesting that almost invariably horses and horse farms are being run by women these days. Very hard to find a male rider anywhere but the race stables. 100 years ago horses were a man's domain, not so much anymore. Well, here in the great Northeast anyways. I used to ride just to be a trend buster but the old back can't take it so I don't anymore. There's nothing much better than being on the back of a good horse that's running like hell.0 -
Matt
We always watch the Triple Crown races and the Preakness was "something" to see. Awesome display of ability !!
Did you notice how Big Browns ears where perked at the end, that horse was pumped and ready for more.
Heres to seeing another Triple Crown Winner.
Scott
PS: It was extremly sad to see the loss of the Horse at the Derby. I don't know the numbers so I can't comment.

Yes, he had plenty to give
WHCIH SHOULD see him thru in The Belmont whcih at 1 1/2 miles is the longest most horses will ever run these days. Yes, it was heartbreaking. Mad Dog

I here ya....but................................................
If one wants to argue that racing is cruel, your show jumping and dressage is right in there with it (in Their eyes) ...They use the same arguments: "....your making an animal do what isn't natural.....saddles, bits, continuous jumping." Mad Dog

my wife mentioned that
she thought Belmont was the longest.
It going to be quite a race to see.
I'd love to see him win the Triple.

You are probably right
but lets see what he can do...he is undefeated too! Secretariat was THEE horse of the 20th Century and Man O War was somethin else too. Actually, reveiwing that great video I saw my Pop was the asst starter that you can see loading Big Red in to the Gate at the '73 Marlboro Cup. He
usually handled Secretariat when he raced in NY. Than for the video. Mad Dog

Yea,
all I meant was there are other outlets for horses besides racing and the zoo but I get your point. When you think about it just us climbing on their backs is unnatural for them. A lot of them seem to enjoy it though and they seem to enjoy human companionship as well. Especially if that human has a carrot or a mint. LOL...0 -
aMEN. I knew what you meant but had to make the point to the
antis out there. Mad Dog
