    Polaris Tank leak

My client's tank has developed a leak at the top HW fitting, which appears to rolled into the tank rather than welded (how smart is that?). It is a 50g 100mbtuh used for DHW and radiant heating through an HX. There was a bit of piping stress but not what I would consider enough to bust a tank. The tank is 9 yrs old so I'm hoping they'll warranty. Any thoughts on this?

    Polaris

has had some issues with leaks in my experience. I have one in my own home that leaked at 4 years. The replacement has been chugging on with no problems for a long time now. I also had a problem with a HO I installed one and she had 5 leakers in the first 3 years. Found the culprit was a bad ground in the electric panel. The house was real old and the main ground wire went from the circuit breaker panel to a clamp on the incoming water pipe in a nasty old crawlspace. The city water authority had just replaced the incoming water lines with plastic water lines and the ground went bye-bye. All stray voltage tried to leave by the Polaris causing the weld joints to fail. What a nightmare. We drove a grounding rod into the ground next to the house and re-ran the ground wire. No problems since. I've not seen the rolled connection. Let us know what the up shot is. WW

Thanx...Where were the leaks in the tanks you worked on?

Were the weld joints at the water connection fittings, or bottom? And did American make it right without too much hassle?

After a bit of phone time American did issue a warranty authorization number and I located a replacement (50gal 130k rather than 50gal 100k which is no longer made. It was close dimensional to the old one but the venting and heating water supply connections had changed. Still can't get a decent answer on whether those connections are supposed to be welded or rolled in. Seems dumb not to have them welded.
