RV change

Got a call
to change a leaking RV on this 6yr old Lennox(Dunkirk),, think this is the only prob?

Hey Dave:
Was the valve actually leaking? The only reason I ask is that there is a lot of rust around the flue, other parts of the boiler etc... Is that chimney lined? It may be condensation due to the cool chimney.

That's as good a place as any
for primary-secondary piping.

Steamhead,...Did you read the Q:?
I thought maybe you posted for another topic.....

I had one very similar looking one like this ...
It was a big old cast Boiler that was hooked up to a bunch of PB tubing... the boiler was deteriorating into the tube and the boiler was also Clogging itself and blowing rusty water all over the floor...
I Had to reverse flush the system, install a cleaner and completely change out every thing..(SS Boiler,Bronze circs,Dom Expansion tanks.Spiro, manifolds,Strainers)
Maybe that is not your Problem but looking at your Pixs :
The circ is pumping into the boiler Return!
Was this a Convention? Baseboard,Rads or Infloor? Where is the Scoop/Spirovent? Are we "Pumping" into the Exp. Tank.? Are there any leaks, i.e. in the slab? Is the expansion Tank Waterlogged? Is the Fill valve Stuck? Was the Exp. adjusted? Does the "Boiler" make "Perking" sounds?
Start by taking a Glass and tapping some Boiler/ system Fluid..Look at it, if it is very Rusty looking stick a Magnet into it.. If you have a lot of "Rust" that may be a Problem..0 -
You`re right Frank & Mike T.
the RV was leaking(mounted horiz), as stains show. HO got tired of emptying pails, the chimney is lined but exposed on 3 sides.
Richard,, this is FTBB w/a few convectors, mono-flo w/o air elimination , the tank is not waterlogged and the circ is pumping away from boiler outlet but towards tank tie-in point. This was installed by a so called reputable company and they wont pay the coin to fix it properly.
As I`ve said many many times,, this is typical of what I see in my area.
Here`s another pic for your perusing.

False Fill..
Ohh, if they are "Pumping" into the Exp.tank the fillvalve may get a False signal to fill, through overfilling the system and Blowing the reliefvalve and bringing in Oxygen every time it fills. Which is bad for that boiler/circ/Exp.tank. Maybe some repiping would be nice..
I see these and worse in my area too.0 -
Of course!
It looks to me like that boiler is condensing, and the most likely cause is that it's getting too much cold return water. P/S can be used to decouple the system flow from the boiler flow, so the boiler will have some warm water coming back to the return tapping soon after it fires.
You can verify this by taking the temperature of the return line. With fin-tube it should come up to temperature relatively quickly.
