What kind of boiler?

Make, Model, Oil, gas ?. If gas are Other appliance on same gas line? Could be just a faulty Ground to the ignition or a dirty flame sensing rod.

Very often my boiler will not fire up, the ignitor just clicks, I shut the system down and wait for about 20 minutes and it does eventually start up. I've had a couple of plumbers look at it, all they could think of doing was cleaning out the burners, but that didnt work. And the pilot is lit (checked that too). Any suggestions?

It is gas, no other appliances on the same gas line. It is a hydronic boiler - type jv, and its about 22 yrs old.

    Got Ground?

Teledyne Laars? Well I would check the Ignition.

Sounds like you got electronic Ignition. Maybe.you get a pilot but it does not "see" that the Pilot is established, therefore the Ignition module will not open the "Main" gasvalve.Check for Proper ground to the Spark (Not thru the gas piping!)

I allways run a serperate Wire directly to the "Sparker".

If this does not help check the Spark Ignition Module or the "Sparker" its self may need to be Cleaned/ Replaced.
