Quite possibly talking about a thermal trap or to be more precise an anti-thermosyphon loop. They are usually 1 foot long. If this is what he means I don't know but I do make these (traps) all the time every time.

We have thermal loops on most of our large heating systems for the bladder expansion tanks. I think its because room temperature water takes up less space than 200 degree water so the tank can do a more efficient job accepting the pressure increase as the water heats up in the system.Idle hands are the devils workshop
