I was given a small superstore indirect water heater. It is quite old. It looks to be in good shape. Short of hook in the little guy up. How do I know if it still works? Can I simply pressure test both the storage tank and heat exchanger? If they hold pressure would it be safe to assume the heat exchanger will still work? I was given no information about the tank.

Big D
I would contact the manufacturer and ask what they would suggest. There is a procedure for filling the tank before the coil on most indirects (or vice versa) so you may want to contact them before you put any kind of pressure in the indirect.

No big deal. Just hook it up to a hose and pressurize the tank with water. If no leaks, you are good to go. No need to test the HX separately. A leak in that will show up when you test the tank.

Check the condition
of the coil if you can. I believe that is a finned copper coil and they sometimes need to be de-limed. A flashlite or one of those Rigid see snake cameras works.

One other item, very important
I would want to know that it was used for heating potable water. Someone could have been using it for a non intended use. Just a thought. Tim0 -
If its been sitting a while, I'd want to disinfect it with bleach overnight just to be sure there are no bugs in there.0
