Indirect tank recommendations (for potable water)

apples vs oranges... please elaborate. Perhaps the indirect tanks are more than meets the eye. One can think of them as a similar tank, except that the heating element is not a gas burner, nor a set of electric rods... rather a tube that has hot water running through it. Other than that are there substantial differences? Is the tank itself vastly different in construction?
Another way of asking my question, what is the range of prices / options of indirect tanks used for residential purposes?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

I'm reviewing bids on my HVAC system that on one design will include a mod/con boiler and an associated indirect tank for domestic hot water. My bids both included the Buderus S120 which lists between $2000 - $3000 range on the internet. I'm surprised as to it's price, especially as to compared to a conventional water tank... expecially since the "heat" is actually provided by a separate device (the boiler) on the Buderus tank.
My question: What are the options... are there any reliable tanks to use for an indirect system that cost less that would still be reliable?0 -
Expectations
What are you looking for in your new system? If your comparing an indirect with a traditional tank water heater your comparing apples and oranges.

Efficiencies
when coupled with a mod con boiler the indirect is able to produce very high eff via the boiler. A typical tank style water heater is able to produce 65-70% eff. With a mod con an indirect can produce 90%.
The stand by losses of a quality indirect should be in the range of 1/2* an hour. Light years beyond a typical water heater. These are just a few of the differences between the two. I'm sure others will offer up suggestions as well.
Prices are not discussed here, but if you think the price is to high get another bid. There are many qualty indirect manufactuer's out there. IMO Triangle tube makes a very good indirect water heater, it's my favorite.
Good Luck
