Got a call from the yellow pages guy

Our price for a small listing went from 22.00 @ month to 37.00 @ month ..

I never had a big advertisment because I decided to put my money in the small local books. This has worked great for me but now as we grow I wonder.

Then again in the days of the internet and now with our site ... Is it really worth ??

Does anyone USE the yellow pages ?? Ar'nt they sort of Old School ??

Opinions Please ?? ( could be a wetstock discussion )

    Yellow pages?

    Biggest waste of paper ever.

It may be a regional thing, but we stopped placing ads about 8 years ago.

On the other hand, $37/month isn't much.

We put a small listing in the Yellow Pages shortly after we went in business. Had maybe a couple of verifiable calls from it. Been out of business over 6 years, ad was still there 5 years later (couldn't get them to take it out but there was no charge)and had more calls after closing up. Word of mouth was always best.

    Being a consumer

I use the Internet. I never ever use the phone book. If I need to look something up I Google it...

If you run an ad, I will never see it!

    Exactly

Use the internet. Or find local magazines or real estate guides.
Yellow pages a waste. Never had one call.

Although I have a tiny, tiny one liner listing and it's costing me 15.00 per month.

It may be worth it if your into the rooter services though.

    Scott, save your money

we pulled over $12,000 worth of ad's and didn't see any real drop on calls. Been around long enough now, plus the web isn't new anymore. I know around here the computer does the walking.
P.S. friend who has a drain cleaning business and they spent $15,000 a month for Boston book along with many other area's, he started to pull them every other year and tracked it, he now only runs small ad's and cut the bill to about $2500.00 a year, keeps one line ads just for emergency non customers, as most are long time commercial accounts .

I think it depends on your market

towns that have a lot of new people moving in or retirees relocating there seem have good Yellow Page return. But you don't know if you don't ask or track it properly.

When we lived and worked in a booming resort town we got plenty of calls from YP.

I like to page through every year to see who the new players, your competition, are. They all start out with YP to gain a presence.

I also like to page through when I visit a new city ot town if I have time. I look for radiant and solar specfic headings and the number of companies listed there. And for clever or eye catching ads.

    37$$$???

Dude that is cheap!!!!I know guys paying 150k$$ YP adds. Now I think that is nuts too. That's like an addiction. but they do generate leads for those guys who have full page adds and 800#s. We get some leads from ours but not many mostly from the net. But I'm not paying for a full page so folks have to flip through 5 pages or so just to get to us. Now we live in a very tech savy area in other locals maybe not so much and YP may still be the way to go

    If you wanna do 24/7...

they can work. At one time we ran alot of large ads. We pulled them all little by little. Not cheap down here. Mad Dog

I always thought YP was a good thing,

But we never really got any response from it.
The homeshows are our best advertising so far. Kevin
  • Sighing...

as I make out this month's check for the YP ad. I haven't had a verifiable call from it since I renewed. I didn't spend much, but still...

    DUDE

read it again Joel, the 37.00 is just for the line space ..No Ad....just my name and tel.

I told the guy forget it. We'll see what happens. In my opinion, if someone is going to the Yellow Pages, its fro an emergency and there are PLENTY of full page guys for that.

Even more so in a booming resort town, people will go to the smaller LOCAL telephone book. I've spent my money there and found it a good return.

I also like to look to see what others are doing. Check out logos, lay outs.
