High Velocity Air Handlers

We have a project coming up that is radiant floor heating through-out. 2400 sq ft bungalow. Original plan for cooling was to install a conventional ducted system with an air handler. I have been researching the option of going with a high velocity system & am wondering if any-one has experience or feed back of pros and cons of going this route. The system I have been looking at is called Quiet-air. Does any-one have any experience with noise levels, comfort, etc compared to a conventional system?

    High Velocity

    Hi Colin,

I used the High Velocity system from Energy Saving Products Co. in my new house. I'm very satisfied with the performance. I have heard some say these are a noisey system but have not found that to be true. My local wholesaler helped my size the system and told me I needed to be sure and have 9 outlets per ton to avoid excessive noise. While these units work under a high static duct pressure, they are low CFM. Again this keeps things from being noisey. My unit also has a ECM motor on the blower for energy savings. I'm very pleased with my system.

    Unico

I have installed Unico in my house on one floor and I have a conventional system on the secod floor. I can say that the Unico system does an excellant job of removing the humidity. So much so that your toes are cold at 75 degrees. I put in 8 outlets per ton and I am somewhat pleased with the performance. There really isn't much noise but there is definately the feeling of "pressure" from the system. So the short of it is I think the Unico does a better job of removing humidity, but the conventional system doesn't have the feeling of pressure.

Thanks for replys. Do your systems work with 1 common return air duct, or are there returns from each room?

    Hi Velocity

    Colin,

I have installed Space Pak, Unico and Hi Velocity. Hi Velocity by far has a superior unit. Three parts, one blower and two boards are all you need to repair the entire unit. We keep three parts in stock which cover all of the units we have installed. Everything is accessible through the front of the unit. The EPC motor is impressive as well. Major saving on current draw, and variable speed. Multiple CFM combinations from the board. Factory Support for engineering and design cannot be beat. The new 2.5" duct allows you to install half of the ducts normally required. The owner of the company is very active in the business. As far as returns, I prefer central return, but of course every job is unique as to what works best. Also check out their new electronic air cleaner if that is important to you. I know I sound like a Hi Velocity salesman but we are just a mechanical contractor that likes to see good equipment with proper factory support.

    Returns

I put in 4 returns in my house Colin. 2 on each level, at opposite ends of a main hall.

One local vendor has Hi Velocity but I'm disappointed that they don't bother with ARI ratings. How can we trust them with capacity and SEER ratings?

I rep ESP's equipment and without a doubt, they are leading the industry in this market. As already mentioned, their HE air handler with the EPC motor and control system is state of the art. The new RPM-E cooling modules have been designed for efficiency and ease of installation and the larger HE flex reduces installation cost by cutting outlets in half. They are the only manufacturer meeting the higher SEER ratings. Check the ARI Directory on line to see if they have completed the testing with the condenser you use. For indoor unit select Energy Saving Products, many have told me they can't find Hi Velocity. Additional interesting features coming in the near future.

    Thanks

That's great, will keep that product in mind next time we have a need. Not many HV installs around here though occasionally find a relic Space Pak to swap out.

    I checked the ARI directory....

and found many listings for the ESP units. They consistantly met or exceeded the efficiency levels of the best factory combinations...right up to 22SEER or so. Unicos and Space Paks cop outs (they got themselves exempted from the newer higher efficiency minimum standards) that hi velocity systems can't reach these new efficency standards has been proven quie wrong. I have never installed A/C, but am looking seriously at it, and the ESP units are what I plan on offering.
