Truly, a man who knew only "grey". Johnny Cash was...and will always be considered a class act.

Louie Armstrong was a GIANT ! My parents and grandparents (Mom's side) were all musicians of one sort or another, and I heard lots O' Louie growing up.

Thanks MPF. Chris

    man

that has to be the earliest example of " Progressive " ( prog ) I've seen ( Charlie Parker ).
  • Parker...

drank himself to death at 34 in 1955. What a tremendous loss. It's good to know there are others out there that can appreciate this stuff. I'm producing a CD that will revolve around "the gray area between jazz and blues" and I'm wandering through all these old clips as a part of my research, happy to share them. The net/youtube is an absolute wonder when it comes to researching old music. I can find at least 5 different versions of "Summertime" for example. From Billie to Janis. ;)

One of my all time fave jazz musician has to be Oscar Peterson. Check out this amazing clip!

  • That clip...

Is a joke, right? Took me about 3 minutes to figure it out.
I'm sitting here thinking, "See, all you need is a big name and you can sit on stage, play crap and get applause." LOL...

    I'm amazed for different reasons

I share the feeling that you-tube is an outstanding format for us "common" people to post videos of "whatever".

I am amazed that there is so much stuff that is considered copyright violation. (all the above noted video-posts would be considered as such)

my short story on copyright infringement:
I am a home-brew musician that first recorded some"covers" of my favorite bands.. one of which WAS Joe Walsh.
I recorded MY version of "Confesser" and posted on you-tube. Months later I received a notice of copyright infringement from mr.Walsh's Attorny. I have since pulled the video, but still can't comprehend why I am not allowed to play & record a song someone else wrote and that I was only doing a "tribute" to.. As of now I'm only doing originals because it is not my intent to infringe on anyones rights.
yet I still see 98% of all videos found on you-tube are direct violations of copyright infringement..so I fell like I've been "picked on".

    thanks letting me vent.

    Oh Man!!!

That got me too. Read the side bar and look to see that what you see is not what you hear. I was rolling by the end.

I always thought that jazz was 4 guys playing different songs at the same time.

No, I hear ya. I can understand if you are getting pay for it, they want a cut because it's their song. My guess is that you made very little (that's a joke) from the video.

I believe that as a member of a cover band that gets paid, we either need to perform in a location that belongs to ASCAP, or be members ourselves. Somehow I think that covers it. If we put out a video or CD for sale we would need to pay royalties to those who wrote the songs.

I'm not 100% sure of how all this works. One of these days I'll have to figure it out.

    internet got serious

You know , I was online when it was text - based...and I was always amazed at listening to guys talk about what it would be...with video , real time video / audio where you would be able to have band practice with someone in Europe ..or whatever , lol. It is not the " beautiful " thing it was supposed to be.

And that just blows me away that you were contacted by lawyers for " jammin " to a song. I'll bet you didn't even have the " Electro - Harmonix " thing ( I forget what it's called , lol ).

Now that the internet has the means to allow one full expression... our system of lawyers and insurance companies restrict it ( at least in the US I guess ). Yeah , when we're all looking at blank screens because of legal issues at least I'll remember sitting in front of my 286 machine waiting for a 29 kb text page to load.

  • Vent away...

That's interesting because I thought you had to profit from the rerecording for it to be infringement. I guess it was becasue you were performing their song publicly and there's no way for ASCAP to collect. ASCAP, BMI and one other collect royalties for performances. Any club you go into is paying a fee for people to come in and play cover tunes. Same with the radio and even college performances. It's then distributed to the artists in proportion to the song's position on the charts. The higher it is on the charts the more likelihood that it will be played therefore it gets a bigger portion of the kitty. That's why being up on the charts is so important to people. ASCAP owns something like 14 versions of Happy Birthday for God's sake. LOL...

The Harry Fox Agency handles royalties when you want to rerecord and re-release a song that has already been recorded by someone else. It's $0.091 per copy with a minimum of 250 copies of a song that is less than 5 minutes. So 1,000 copies cost $91. Songs over 5 minutes were a bit more, $0.17 If I remember right.

I'll never forget my friend who opened up a coffee shop. ASCAP was immediately on his ****. He said he'd only allow non ASCAP songs. They said that would be impossible, they would send in spies and each time they heard an ASCAP song played would be a separate lawsuit for $10,000. He paid their fee. You can't win against them. They have lots of money and slick lawyers.
  • LOL...

I think you may be right on that one. I didn't recognize it as a farce until I saw the guitar player up close. I play so that's when I could tell he wasn't playing what I was hearing. The piano had me hook, line and sinker. I figured he's either brilliant or he's just banging on the piano. ;)

Thanks for the info, M. All very interesting. A CD with 10 cover songs costs a minimum of $910, plus the costs to record the songs, burn the CD, and art work. Ouch!
  • Yup, you got it,,,

That's all to the best of my recollection, you can go those places on the net and get more refined info on it. I'm paying musicians as well. I'm guessing $15,000 to get it all done and the first 1000 printed. I figure I could pay twice as much for a Masters Degree and learn 1/2 as much or just get the OJT. So it's for educational purposes. (and the write offs) (and the contacts)

If I pull it off I'll let you know where to get a copy. it'll be a while yet. ;)

At first I thought they were just warming up. That guitar was a give away. Sounded like, and probably was, one of those toy guitars.

Of course, once you figure it out it's obvious that no one is playing what you hear.

    Duh on me:)

    So...

What are you playin? Anything on the web to listen to?

    If you haven't seen mine - www.sonicbids.com/waybackmachine
  • I play nothing...

on the CD. I'm just the producer. I want to be able to maybe sell a few copies when it's done. ;)

We expect to lay down the first few tracks within the next couple weeks. The toughest part so far has been trying to work around some of these people's schedules. You would not BELIEVE what some of the pros go through as far as travel and schedule. I don't know how they can do it and still put on a viable performance when the time comes.

    Hey

I just got word that we are opening for Eric Burdon and the Animals on May 3rd at the Ridgefield Playhouse. We are psyched!

What kind of music are you producing? Is this your first shot? I can imagine the logistics have to be pretty wild.
  • Ridegfield where?

    CT?

I love them guys! That's great! What do you guys play?

What I'm trying to do is create a compilation of various very talented people redoing a lot of the old stuff (like above) and pretty much giving them free reign on how they'd like to do it. I found a great young female singer and things like "Summertime" and "Rt 66" will be on there. Mostly songs that are somewhere between blues and jazz. I've worked locally for quite a while helping to produce
live performances by some of the top guitarists around, so I'm kind of hitting up the ones I like. Most of them like the idea too, which was a shocker at first. I thought it was a bit harebrained myself, but I'm not arguing with them. ;)

  • Wow,,,

I'll check the schedule, I'll try to get there, sounds cool.
  • Link...

to the people I work with. I think I'm on my 15th or so season. I "coordinate" the volunteers. It mostly involves exuding a calm, matter of factness about things while everybody else wants to be frantic. I find getting a few, BUT NOT TOO MANY, wines in them helps a bit. LOL...

We have one this Thursday night the 17th. Saturday's show is canceled.
